If your business is classed as a DNFBP in the UAE, registering on the goAML portal is not optional — it is the legal starting point of your anti-money-laundering obligations. This guide explains who must register, how the process works, and what your business is expected to do after registration.
What is goAML?
goAML is the reporting platform of the UAE Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU). It is the official channel through which businesses submit suspicious transaction reports and other AML filings. Registration is how the authorities know your business exists, who your compliance officer is, and that you are meeting your obligations under the UAE's anti-money-laundering framework.
Who must register? (Are you a DNFBP?)
DNFBP stands for Designated Non-Financial Businesses and Professions. In the UAE this includes real estate brokers and agents involved in property transactions; dealers in precious metals and precious stones — gold, diamonds and jewellery businesses; auditors and accountants, including bookkeeping firms; and corporate service providers offering company formation, registered office or directorship services.
If your trade licence covers any of these activities, registration applies to you — regardless of company size, and regardless of whether you have ever seen a suspicious transaction.
How the registration works
First, appoint a compliance officer (MLRO) — the person responsible for AML compliance. Next, complete the pre-registration step to obtain secure access credentials for the portal. Then register your organisation on goAML with your trade licence details, the authorised person's identity documents, and business contact information. Once approved, your business is registered with the FIU and able to file reports.
The process is document-sensitive: mismatched licence details or wrongly scoped activities are the most common reasons registrations stall.
Registration is the beginning, not the end
After registering, a DNFBP is expected to maintain a working AML programme: a written AML/CFT policy tailored to your business, a documented business risk assessment, customer due diligence and sanctions screening before onboarding clients, suspicious transaction reporting through goAML when red flags arise, staff training and proper record-keeping, and periodic independent AML audits to test that the programme actually works.
Failing to register — or registering and doing nothing after — exposes the business to administrative fines that can run into millions of dirhams, alongside licence consequences.
